The Last Frontier

Alaska occupies the northwestern part of North America and includes the Aleutian Islands, a chain of about 150 islands that arcs westward across the Pacific Ocean. Alaska has more lakes and rivers than any other state, equaling more than the entire size of Massachusetts and Vermont combined. The area of lakes and rivers in Alaska equals more than the entire size of the states of Massachusetts and Vermont combined.

Alaska has four different climatic zones: maritime, continental, transitional, and Arctic. The Kodiak, Aleutians and southeastern and south central Alaskan climate is influenced by the sea, so temperatures do not vary greatly throughout the year, but rainfall is quite high and frequent. Arctic Alaska has very little snowfall, cool summer temperatures, and frequent high winds, particularly from the east.

The state capitol is Juneau and Anchorage is the largest city. Over half of the state's population live in Anchorage and the surrounding communities. A network of 259 miles of hiking, biking, skiing and dog-mushing trails can be found in Anchorage. Recreational activities available in Anchorage include fishing, skiing (downhill, cross-country, heli-skiing), hiking, marathons, fun runs and softball. Other activities include the opera, professional theatre touring companies and the symphony. Anchorage is also the host of the start of the world-famous Iditarod Sled Dog race. Denali Park is just a few hours drive from Anchorage. Grizzly and black bear, moose, caribou, fox, and Mt. McKinley are all part of Alaska too. Many hours of sun in the summer, and dancing Northern Lights in the skies in the winter, are just a couple of the phenomenal attractions Alaska has to offer.
